In the early 1890's, phosphate was discovered
in the Mt. Pleasant area, and the city quickly
became a mining boom-town. Mt. Pleasant
became known as the phosphate capital of the
world, and in 1896, there was a brief attempt to
name the town "Phosphate City".
Mt. Pleasant is located in the south central portion
of middle Tennessee and the southwestern portion
of Maury County. The city is 50 miles southwest of Nashville, Tennessee, 60 miles northwest of Huntsville, Alabama, and 55 miles north of the Alabama tri-cities of Florence, Tuscumbia and Sheffield.
From its beginning, first as a farming community, then as an important mining center, the City of Mt. Pleasant has grown to accommodate a diverse group of industrial companies, not only from all over the United States, but industries with international links to Canada, England, France and Japan.
The city has always had excellent transportation links for people and markets. It is refreshingly removed from the "big city rat race" but is close enough to Nashville to enjoy all the cultural activities, entertainment and major league sports provided by that city. Being in central Tennessee and having excellent highway, air and rail transportation systems makes Mt. Pleasant easily accessible to major markets in the southwest and beyond.
